Things I Made this Summer

This is the Harry Potter wand I made with my super duper sister and brother in law. All you need is hot glue, white glue, double sided tape, a piece of paper, and paint.

Our value at camp this year was "virtue". I stamped it onto bronze washers using a metal stamping kit from the craft store. This is my finished nametag- Each girl had one she had to wear at all times.



This is called prince regent cake or prinzregenten torte. It is so good but it took me over 2 hours to make it! It didn't look as good as the one in the photo, but it tastes like heaven.



CAKE: 1 3/4 cup sugar, 1/3 cup hot water, 3 cups flour, 1 tbsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp salt, 3/4 cup butter, 3 eggs, 1 tsp vanilla, 2/3 cup milk
FILLING: 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup cornstarch, 2 eggs, 1 1/2 cup milk, 1 tsp vanilla, 3 oz semi-sweet chocolate
FROSTING: 10 oz Semisweet chocolate, 1 1/2 tsp oil

PREP
Cake: place 1/2 cup of sugar in a heavy sauce pan. Over medium heat, cook the sugar, stirring until it browns (stir constantly so it doesn't burn). Remove from heat and add the water. Allow to cool. Then sift the flour, baking powder, and salt together. I don't have a sifter so I just sprinkled everything into the flour and used a whisk to mix it. In another bowl, cream the butter and remaining sugar together until very light. Beat in the eggs one at a time. In another bowl, mix the cooled syrup in and add the vanilla and the milk. Alternate flour and liquid into the creamed mixture in thirds. Cut eight 8 inch diameter rounds from wax paper or parchment and put on cookie pans. Divide batter evenly between them (this is hard and I didn't make it perfect) so that batter goes to 1 1/2 inch from the edge of the paper. Bake each or 2 at a time for 7-8 minutes. (I poured two, baked two, poured two, baked two).
Filling: In a sauce pan or a double boiler, blend the sugar with the cornstarch and eggs. Whip in the milk and vanilla. Heat over medium heat. Stir in the chocolate. Cook until sauce is very thick. Let it cool. Stack the cakes and put filling in between them.
Frosting: Melt the chocolate and oil together in a double boiler or the microwave (be careful not to microwave it too long or it will burn) While it's still melted, pour over the cake and spread over the sides. Cool it in the fridge until the cake has a hard chocolate shell.

I'll just talk about my week!

1. CRAWDAD FISHING

I FINALLY went crawdad fishing on Mt Lemmon yesterday with Adam, Doug, and Andrea. We only caught three crawdads and they were all pretty tiny. Adam spent most of the time trying to catch dragonflies with the nets we bought at WalMart. He actually caught like 4 of them (and of course let them go). I also made a bean dip which it didn't take long to eat. I like Rose Canyon lake a lot.... We all decided it would be really fun to camp there sometime.

2. I HAVE FOUR NEW JOBS
I am now working as an SLPA at Cross, Ironwood Ridge, Prince, and Mesa Verde. That's one middle school, one high school, one preschool, and one elementary school. Mainly I just have groups of kids that will work with me on either articulation (most of them are /r/ and /s/ kids) or language (reading comprehension, vocab, verb/noun agreement). Some of them just have to practice pragmatics (taking turns, appropriate language) . It should be interesting because starting Monday, I am doing it all by myself at the middle and high school. The elementary school and preschool SLPS have enough time to help me ease into it. But man! It's crazy. I am trying to think of how to integrate kid's curriculum from their other classes into it and how to jazz it up a bit. Also if anyone knows of a picture book about someone who won't stop talking about themselves or things they like and doesn't care about anyone else, let me know. We need it for the elementary school.

3. ADAM TOOK THE GRE
but we have no idea what score he got since it's a revised test and they have yet to figure out the scoring system. Once we get it, we can apply for PSEP- I love how I always say "we", when it's really just "he"- it just feels like "we" because where we go next year has a lot to do with our future. PSEP is a scholarship for people who are going for a graduate program in health sciences when that grad program isn't offered publicly in their state- in our case, occupational therapy. We may end up in...
phoenix (midwestern/ AT Still) albuquerque (UNM) Seattle (U of W) or Spokane (EWU) . Probably phoenix though.

4. WE WATCHED PRETTY MUCH ALL OF DOLLHOUSE

We decided to stop doing instant play on netflix but before we go to dvd's only, we definitely binged on the last show on there that we wanted to watch... Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse".. LOTS of cool philosophical questions in that show- ghost in the machine type stuff. But we're done, netflix. We have watched pretty much everything worth watching.

I do have to say that this guy is the best actor on the show. Probably one of the best actors I've ever seen. Ever.


5. THE HOBBIT
Adam is reading me the hobbit. It's awesome. Our new bedtime routine is teeth, prayers, earplugs (a new thing for me, they make it so i don't wake up in the night thinking our AC is a nuclear attack) and then hobbit and sleep. So far it's amazing. I can't wait for the movie!

Ok well that's it for now. Things i'm looking forward to are going to a concert with LIz next week and then going to Wildwood with my momma on friday ( if i can get to the airport on time!!!) Yay I miss my family so much sometimes..
